Airport announces new short haul routes
By James Chapelard
Manchester Airport is to gain two extra services this summer following new route announcements by Monarch and Czech Airlines.
Czech Airlines is to restart flights between Manchester and Prague at the end of the month, offering a service flying a Boeing 737-400 aircraft wjhich will operate six times a week. The airline, which is facing heavy losses for 2009, will be going head-to-head with Bmibaby on the popular route. Bmibaby also flies to the Czech capital from East Midlands and Birmingham airports.
Monarch is adding Santorini to its portfolio of Greek islands from Manchester this summer. Monarch’s new charter flights to Santorini will operate weekly (every Tuesday) from Gatwick and Manchester between May 5 and October 5, 2010.
The Department of Transport estimates that Manchester Airport will double the number of flights it handles by 2050, from 213,000 take-offs and landings in 2005 to 449,000.
The prediction was made in a submission to the Committee on Climate Change, an independent body established under the Climate Change Act to advise the UK Government on setting carbon budgets. Environmental campaigners described the prediction as “shocking.”
The Department of Transport predicts that Manchester will overtake Gatwick as the second largest airport and will accommodate as many flights as Heathrow currently handles.
