Gatwick Airport praised for public transport links
Gatwick Airport has been praised for the quality of its public transport links by a rail network campaign group.Railfuture compiled a report into the public transport links for the UK's major airports, including Heathrow Airport and Gatwick Airport. It found that there are huge variations within the level of service offered.
Trevor Garrod, who was involved in compiling the report, said: "Gatwick is a good example of best practice, with the rail station connected to the airport. Other rail connections have to be made via a bus or coach link, which is less satisfactory."
He added that there was no national system in place for improving public transport links to airports.
The report found that Heathrow Airport was still best accessed by road on public transport. This could mean that more people will choose to take their cars and purchase HeathrowAirport parking.
Manchester Airport, Birmingham Airport, London Stansted Airport and Southampton Airport were all named as having "best practice" rail links. However, even those using public transport could remove the worry of delays by travelling the day before and booking an airport hotel.
Stewart Wingate, chief executive of Gatwick Airport, said recently that he was hoping that it would soon become the "airport of choice" for passengers.
